Kites is about an Indian boy’s romantic affair with a Latina girl and their predicament as they do not understand each other’s language. Hrithik Roshanplays a salsa teacher in "Kites". Kangana Ranaut plays a very rich girl and is shown as Hrithik’s dance student. The story is set in Las Vegas. In the course of learning Salsa from him, she falls madly in love with him. But then a twist in the tale takes place and the romantic story takes a thriller turn. Barbara Mori plays a latina who speaks only in Spanish which Hrithik can’t speak a word of. So he speaks to her in Hindi and yet the two communicate and fall madly in love. But then something happens that forces the two to split and that’s where Kangana Ranautsteps in.
The film will be Basu's seventh directorial venture in total. Some of his commercially successful films till date have been Murder, Gangster and Life In A... Metro.
In sharp contrast to Basu's earlier movies, Kites will be mounted on a huge canvas, and shot across Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New Mexico. To make it more glamorous Rakesh Roshan has even roped in Latin American actressBarbara Mori as Hrithik's heroine. Several names had been put forward for the leading lady’s role. Apparently, Rakesh Roshan, who is very close to Anil Kapoorand quite fond of Anil’s daughter Sonam Kapoor, wanted to cast her. Sonam, who is conscious of her conservative image, excused herself because the role required the girl to get `seriously sexy’ with Hrithik. The film also stars Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut who has previously worked with Basu in Gangster andLife In A... Metro.
Shooting started on 20 July 2008 and continued till 15 September 2008 across various parts of the USA for 3 months, after that the final schedule will be in India for 2 months, meaning filming should be complete by January 2009. There after the film will go in to post-production and is scheduled to be released in mid 2009. The Shooting was recently disrupted in New Mexico due to the onset of Hurricane lke and hence added on to the costs of the movie and disturbing the shooting schedules. Reported was a controversy surrounding a lip-lock with Barbara in the film. this was the second time that Hrithik got into a controversy regarding a smooch, first was kissing Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2 in 2006.
The movie portrays Hrithik in a sensuous role. According to sources, the scenes between Hrithik and Barbara were so intimate and sensuous that Rakesh Roshan was gently asked to leave the set. Cinematographer Bobby Singh opted out of “Kites”, but Hrithik claimed there was no ill-will involved in the changeover. He said “It was an amicable split. Now Ayananka Bose is doing it,”.
On 23 November it was reported that Rakesh Roshan was facing lawsuit in aCalifornia court for alleged non-payment of wages to the people that his production company hired during the shooting of “Kites” at various locations in the US. In the law suit filed before the California Central District Court Oct 7, people hired by Filmcraft Production and its local agents alleged that they were not being paid their due wages. Sources familiar with the lawsuit, said that efforts were made for an out of court settlement on this issue by some well-known Bollywood celebrities.
The production faced much problem with Hrithik meeting with an accident and hurting his knee, while doing a dangerous car stunt for the film. He was however able to recover.
The movie will be released on December 18 2009. The distribution rights of Kites have been sold to Reliance Big Pictures for a large amount of Rs 150 crores. It is a record till date for Bollywood.
The film soundtrack will be directed by music director Rajesh Roshan.
